Frequently Asked Questions.
Find quick answers to common questions about Wriffen.
What is Wriffen?
Wriffen is professional screenwriting software created by a screenwriter who understands the real pain points of the writing process. It provides comprehensive file management, industry-standard screenplay formatting, and modern collaboration tools.
Is Wriffen really free?
Yes, absolutely. Wriffen is completely free with no artificial limitations, watermarks, or script limits. You get professional-grade screenplay formatting, comprehensive file management, import/export capabilities, and all the core features you need to write professionally formatted scripts. We believe every writer deserves access to quality tools.
How do you make money? What's your business model?
We offer optional additional tools for writers who want them: AI writing assistance and real-time collaboration features. The core editor will always be completely free; that's not a promotional offer, it's our fundamental commitment.
We're a small, independent company with no private equity ownership and no interest in seeking investors. We're building a sustainable business by serving writers who choose these additional tools, not by limiting the free experience or answering to investors who demand aggressive monetization.
How does Wriffen compare to other free screenwriting software?
Wriffen provides true cross-platform support (Mac, Windows, and Linux), has a modern interface, offers collaboration features, has no script limits, no ads, better file management, more professional formatting options, and no forced watermarks. Since our core program is completely free, it has none of the little annoyances designed to pressure you into choosing additional tools.
How is Wriffen different from Final Draft?
Wriffen focuses on what matters: your writing experience. While Final Draft spends development time on features like adding emojis to scripts, we build every feature around actual writing workflows. For instance, you can edit dual dialogue without having to break it first, or track the revision history of individual lines. These are tools that save you time and creative momentum because they're designed by someone who actively writes scripts and understands what writers really need.
What platforms does Wriffen support?
Wriffen works on Mac, Windows, and Linux. We provide a truly cross-platform solution so you can write on whatever device you prefer.
Can I import my existing scripts?
Yes, Wriffen supports import and export for multiple common screenwriting formats including PDF and FDX, so you can easily move between different tools or share your work with industry professionals. Ready to switch? Simply import your existing scripts and start writing.
What additional tools are available?
AI Toolkit (coming August 2025): Writing assistance, formatting help, and creative suggestions that help foster your creativity rather than replace it.*
Collaboration Features (coming December 2025): Real-time collaboration, shared projects, commenting system, and version control.
Wriffen will always be completely free, and we are dedicated to keeping the price for these additional tools low and accessible to writers at all levels.
Do you use my scripts to train AI models?
Absolutely not. Your creative work is exclusively yours. Wriffen stores your scripts directly on your device, meaning we have no access to your content whatsoever. This commitment ensures your work will never be used to train our AI models, nor will it ever be shared with any third parties for AI training purposes. Your privacy and the complete ownership of your creative output are our bedrock principles.
Who created Wriffen?
Wriffen was created by Aaron Preacher (a working-ish screenwriter) and Chase Preacher (a professional programmer). We're brothers who combined our skills to create software that actually serves writers' needs. This isn't corporate software built by people who've never written a script; it's created by someone who lives the day-to-day reality of screenwriting and his much smarter brother.
Do I need an internet connection to use Wriffen?
No, the core writing functionality works completely offline. You only need internet access for additional tools like AI assistance and real-time collaboration.
Can I use Wriffen for professional projects?
Absolutely. Wriffen produces industry-standard formatted screenplays that meet professional submission requirements. The free editor alone is sufficient for all professional writing needs.
Will Wriffen always be free?
Yes, we're committed to keeping Wriffen completely free. This isn't a temporary promotional offer; it's our fundamental belief that every writer should have access to professional tools regardless of their budget.
Can I collaborate with other writers?
Yes, through our import/export capabilities you can work with users of other screenwriting software by exchanging FDX and most other screenwriting file formats. When collaboration features launch in December 2025, you'll be able to work in real-time with other Wriffen users on shared projects.
